A text – Genesis 1:1-5
1:1 In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth,
1:2 the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters.
1:3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.
1:4 And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness.
1:5 God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.
A reflection:
From the start, the very first moment of anything that means anything to us human beings, when earth wasn’t anything but void and formless, God was. And God’s “Wind” was. And God’s Word was.
The Wind – let’s call it the Holy Spirit – swept over the face of the waters. It was making way to receive the Word of God. It was creating receptivity.
The Word came from God’s own voice and said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God liked that light and gathered it up, separating it from the darkness. The Word had made something wonderful. God was pleased enough to work with that created light and even name it. Now creation had day as well as night.
The Holy Trinity was busy working together from the very start of the universe that we call home. From that moment right until now, God the creator is busy inventing and creating, God the Holy Spirit is sweeping over what is and creating receptivity for what will be, and Jesus, the Word, is changing, healing, and loving all that has been created. Way back then and right now. God the Trinity is still creating a trustworthy world, just as God did at the moment Jesus was baptized, when Jesus, the Holy Spirit as a dove, and the Creator spoke loving words to the beloved Son.
This mysterious God is always present with us, bringing us love and encouragement. Even at this moment. We are beloved and we can receive peace. Direct from the source of all peace.
A prayer:
Lord God, Thank you for loving us. Thank you for bringing the world into being, for being our loving heavenly parent, for extending to us the peace and joy you have in your life as Three in One. Help us to linger in this mystery and accept the peace you offer to us, your beloved children. Then help us extend your peace to someone who needs it today. Amen.
