A text – Psalm 62:5-12
62:5 For God alone my soul waits in silence, for my hope is from him.
62:6 He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken.
62:7 On God rests my deliverance and my honor; my mighty rock, my refuge is in God.
62:8 Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us. Selah
62:9 Those of low estate are but a breath, those of high estate are a delusion; in the balances they go up; they are together lighter than a breath.
62:10 Put no confidence in extortion, and set no vain hopes on robbery; if riches increase, do not set your heart on them.
62:11 Once God has spoken; twice have I heard this: that power belongs to God,
62:12 and steadfast love belongs to you, O Lord. For you repay to all according to their work.
A reflection:
The theme in this psalm is simple. God alone can be depended upon, like a rock, like a refuge. God is what you can trust in. Not people and their acts – even very good people can let you down.
“Trust in God at all times, O people, Pour out your heart to God. God is a refuge for us.” What does that look like for 21st century Americans, do you think? When we experience disillusionment, disappointment, or despair, we should seek out God. Anything else we put our confidence in could let us down. But God will always be our rock, our strength, our refuge.
When we are confused about the world, or about our family, or about the friends we thought we knew, we should turn in the direction of God, who will always be there, our rock and our refuge. Once we have turned to God, we are to pray, either with words or just by lingering in God’s presence. We will feel our security returning, because there will be one thing we have always known that still remains true: God.
Are we feeling these days as though our footing is slipping, either in ourselves and our ability to see clearly, or in our world? That what once was self-evident and could be counted upon is now fragile or broken or just gone? God perseveres. God is ever loving and ever powerful and ever THERE. So if we seek something trustworthy, we look to God. God will not disappoint.
A prayer:
Lord God, Thank you for loving us. Thank you for being ever present and always dependable. Thank you for reassuring us that you are our rock even when everything else seems to give way. Help us to show your strength and dependability to others who seek safety. Amen.
