The Lord Is King – Psalm 93

A text – Psalm 93

The Lord is king; he is robed in majesty; the Lord is robed; he is girded with strength. He has established the world; it shall never be moved;
your throne is established from of old; you are from everlasting.

The floods have lifted up, O Lord, the floods have lifted up their voice; the floods lift up their roaring.
More majestic than the thunders of mighty waters, more majestic than the waves[a] of the sea, majestic on high is the Lord!

Your decrees are very sure; holiness befits your house, O Lord, forevermore.

A reflection:

Sometimes we have to read a psalm to remember we are in our lives for the LONG game. But here is our reminder:

The Lord is king. He is robed in majesty; the Lord is robed; he is girded with strength. He has established the world; it shall never be moved; your throne is established from of old; you are from everlasting.

Then out to the most powerful forces on earth: even the mighty floods rise up to praise the Lord –  “Majestic on high is the Lord.” Even the rushing dangerous flood waters of river and sea praise the Lord.

Then down to the most specific laws: “Your decrees are very sure; holiness befits your house, O Lord, forevermore.” The same cannot be said of human kings, their decrees, and their houses. But the Lord is King. And the Lord is good.

What is the ancient prayer Jesus would have said each morning? Something like “I thank You, Adonai, for the rest You have given me through the night and for the breath that renews my body and spirit. May I renew my soul with faith in You, Source of all Healing. Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Ruler of the Universe, who renews daily the work of creation.”

Every morning we can remind ourselves that the Lord is King from forever, that the Lord renews daily the work of creation, and that the Lord renews our bodies and spirits for another day of building trust in the world. The job is ours, and the pay happens in daily doses of seeing God at work. Peace to your house.

A prayer:

Lord God, Thank you for loving us. Thank you for the breath you give us and the renewal of creation you do every day. Help us to remember that we too have a job as you continue to create a trustworthy world. Thank you for hiring us to be trust-builders in the world. Amen.
